=Americans found themselves settling for a subpar option when the last iteration of the Passat hit the U.S. market, lacking the sophistication seen in its European counterpart. Meanwhile, China enjoyed the superior Magotan in 2018, and now, the next-generation model is making its debut. The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has unveiled early images of the 2025 Magotan, showcasing a sedan exclusively available in China, diverging from the global trend where the Passat is now solely a wagon in Europe and other regions. Despite sharing mechanical roots with the Skoda Superb, the Magotan boasts distinct design alterations tailored to Chinese preferences.
While not the pinnacle of excitement in design, the Magotan does display a need for a touch more flair, albeit subjective. In comparison to its European counterpart, the Magotan presents a boxier silhouette with a conventional trunk lid, deviating from the Superb’s more practical tailgate. The taillight design, reminiscent of VW’s electric ID. models, features an extended light bar. All showcased versions exhibit an exhaust tip discreetly tucked beneath the bumper.
The matte black/grey variant stands out as the most luxurious, adorned with a "Flagship" script on the front doors beneath the side mirrors. Riding on two-tone wheels and complemented by glossy black accents, this variant offers a bold visual statement. For those inclined towards a more audacious appearance, the Magotan is available in a striking purple hue.
Accompanying the images are specifications detailing size and engine capabilities. The new family sedan spans 196.4 inches in length, 73 inches in width, and stands at 58.5 inches tall, with a wheelbase of 113 inches. Weighing in at 3,712 pounds, the Magotan is equipped with wheels ranging from 17 to 19 inches. Its power source is a turbocharged 2.0-liter gasoline engine generating 217 horsepower.
It’s worth noting that the Magotan isn’t Volkswagen’s largest sedan in China. Serving as a spiritual successor to the long-gone Phaeton, the opulent Phideon holds the esteemed position of the company’s flagship sedan in the country. Volkswagen boasts a diverse sedan lineup in China, featuring models such as the Lamando L, Lavida, Sagitar, CC, Santana, Bora, Passat, Magotan, and Phideon.
This extensive array underscores the enduring appeal of the traditional sedan body style in 2024 in China, even in the face of global shifts towards SUVs in recent decades.
