However, it wasn’t until December 2022, five years after the initial announcement, that the company was able to make its first delivery of the Semi fleet to Pepsi. The delay was attributed to limitations in battery production.

The Tesla Semi boasts impressive features, including the ability to carry 81,000 pounds of cargo, a range of up to 500 miles, and a rapid acceleration of 0 to 60 mph in just 20 seconds. It also has a highly efficient energy consumption rate of less than 2 kWh per mile, and can be charged to 70% in just 30 minutes. Additionally, the truck is equipped with an enhanced autopilot system, semi-autonomous capabilities, and active safety controls.

Many major companies, including Walmart, United Parcel Services, and Brewer Anheuser-Busch, have already placed reservations for the Tesla Semi. Not only is it a environmentally-friendly option, it is also projected to save up to $200,000 in fuel costs over a three-year period and may qualify for up to $40,000 in tax credits under the Inflation Reduction Act for green commercial vehicles.

The new factory that Tesla is building will be dedicated to the mass production of the Semi electric truck. The second unit within the factory will focus on the production of the 4680 batteries. This will allow the company to reduce the cost of the batteries by half and achieve its goal of selling 20 million electric vehicles by 2030. However, experts have pointed out that the 4680 battery faces scaling issues as the dry coating technique used to produce the bigger battery is new and unproven. Tesla has not yet announced any details about how it plans to overcome these scaling issues in the new factory.

Tesla faces strong competition in the electric truck market from established players like Nikola Corp, Daimler’s Freightliner, and Volvo. In order to stay competitive, the company plans to produce around 50,000 Semi trucks in 2024. However, the actual details of the factory setup and how the company plans to overcome the scaling issues of the 4680 batteries have not been announced yet.
