Latest Update: 2024 Audi R8 Japan Final Edition debuts in December 2023, with the price of $247,000.
We once believed that the R8 GT RWD marked the grand finale for Audi’s supercar legacy, but much to our surprise, that’s not the final note. Japan is set to witness the arrival of an exclusive Final Edition based on the coupe, and a mere eight of these exceptional cars will find lucky owners. Cloaked in a sophisticated matte Ibis White hue, this mid-engine marvel takes the form of a heightened Performance variant, proudly equipped with Quattro all-wheel drive.
The R8 Japan Final Edition doesn’t just boast exclusivity in numbers; it’s a visual and performance spectacle. The vehicle rolls on striking 20-inch wheels, featuring matte bronze spokes that have been meticulously polished to mimic the allure of gold. Paired with eye-catching red calipers for the ceramic brakes, the aesthetic is further enhanced. The naturally aspirated V10 powerhouse dons mirror caps crafted from carbon fiber, mirroring the front spoiler lip and side blades. The lightweight treatment extends to the rear wing, diffuser, and side skirts, culminating in a truly distinguished appearance.
Step inside, and Audi Japan has curated a driver-focused cabin with a captivating two-tone theme in Black and Alabaster White. Nappa leather envelops the seats, while the headliner and the space behind the seats luxuriously embrace Alcantara. To signify the model’s exclusivity, the door sill trim proudly displays its distinct identity. Purchasers of this automotive masterpiece are also bestowed with a commemorative plate bearing the unique VIN number.
Reflecting on the R8’s evolution, the initial model offered a V8 engine paired with a delightful gated manual gearbox. Its successor, however, emerged solely in V10 form with an automatic transmission. Despite its eight-year tenure, an entry-level variant was considered, featuring a turbocharged inline-five borrowed from the RS3, a manual transmission, and rear-wheel drive. Although it wielded less horsepower, it delivered more torque than its naturally aspirated V10 counterpart, earning praise for being "cleaner and almost as quick" from Marcos Marques, Project Manager eFuels at Porsche.
The R8 now stands at the threshold of retirement, following in the footsteps of Audi’s other sports car, the TT, which concluded its production in November. While there have been hints of these iconic nameplates making a return as purely electric models, the road to their resurrection may be a journey that enthusiasts will need to await patiently.
