there were rumors about Audi’s plans to revamp its nomenclature. Now, the luxury carmaker has confirmed a new naming strategy. Audi CEO Markus Duesmann announced in an interview with German magazine Auto Bild that the upcoming next-gen A4 will be marketed as the A5 while the future A6 will transition to the A7 moniker. This move will allow Audi to use odd numbers for its combustion engine vehicles and even numbers for its EVs.

Duesmann added that the A4 will return as an electric vehicle, positioned below a future zero-emission A6, while details about the current A5 and A7 lineups will be revealed later. He did mention that there will be "many emotional and high-performance derivatives" in the coming years, indicating the release of S and RS variants.

The switch from A4 to A5 for gasoline/diesel-fueled vehicles means that Audi is likely working on S5 Sedan/Avant and RS5 Avant models. However, it’s unclear whether Audi plans to sell an A5 Sedan alongside the A5 Sportback. So far, only the A5 Avant has been spotted, and its world premiere is still months away.

When asked about the "E-Tron" suffix, Duesmann said it would not be dropped, unlike rival Mercedes, which reportedly plans to phase out EQ branding from 2024. BMW, on the other hand, will continue to use "i" to differentiate its EVs from gasoline/diesel models.

Audi’s A4 successor is set to debut later this year, with the A6 due for a facelift soon. The A6 may be renamed the A7 as early as 2024 or 2025, unless Audi decides to wait for the next-gen car. The flagship A8 will retain its name for the next-gen model arriving in late 2024, as it will only be sold as an electric vehicle.

Audi plans to launch no less than 20 new cars in the next two years, over half of which will be EVs. Duesmann confirmed that one of these will serve as Audi’s entry-level EV and slot below the Q4 E-Tron, possibly a compact hatchback on a dedicated platform, like an electric A3.
