Latest Update: Lexus Modular EV Concept is expected to arrive by 2026.
Lexus, the renowned Japanese automaker, has tantalized auto enthusiasts with a sneak peek of its forthcoming modular electric vehicle (EV) concept. Unveiled within its home market, this teaser image offers a glimpse of the vehicle’s frontal aspect, spotlighting a striking set of LED daytime running lights.
The curtain is set to rise on the full reveal of this concept car next month during the much-anticipated Japan Mobility Show 2023. This unveiling marks the prelude to a significant development in the Lexus repertoire: the introduction of their inaugural next-generation battery-powered vehicle, scheduled to make its debut in 2026. This pioneering endeavor incorporates an entirely fresh platform, an overhauled production process, and an unwavering commitment to enhancing efficiency.
It remains a matter of speculation whether the vehicle featured in this latest teaser image maintains any kinship with the futuristic Lexus sedan teased in April. However, clues lie in the conspicuous, expansive apertures adorning the front bumper and the sleek, almost ethereal electronic side mirrors, suggesting a connection to the earlier-revealed concept.
At present, Lexus confines its electric offerings in the United States to the RZ all-electric crossover, while Europe embraces the UX 300e subcompact EV. Nonetheless, the luxury brand, under the stewardship of Toyota, aspires to traverse the electric avenue vigorously. Their ambitious target is to furnish an electrified option for every model by 2030 and to transition solely to electric vehicles by 2035.
In line with this electrification strategy, the maiden emission-free vehicle under this banner is primed for a 2026 debut. It rests upon a three-piece modular platform, a brainchild of parent company Toyota. This innovation substantially streamlines production processes and augments productivity, courtesy of Toyota’s groundbreaking giga-casting elements.
Turning to the power source, Toyota has outlined two battery options for the upcoming 2026 EV generation. First, a traditional lithium-ion (Li-ion) pack promises an impressive driving range exceeding 427 miles, all at a 20 percent lower production cost compared to the existing battery pack featured in the bZ4X crossover. Second, a more budget-friendly lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO) alternative boasts a range of 327 miles, accompanied by a 40 percent reduction in production costs compared to the bZ4X battery.
Charging convenience is paramount in the electric vehicle landscape. The Li-ion variant facilitates a rapid charge from a mere 10 percent State of Charge (SoC) to 80 percent in approximately 20 minutes. Meanwhile, the LiFePo iteration accomplishes the same feat in around 30 minutes.
