2023 Toyota Avalon Hybrid is available with Cruise Control, Heated Steering Wheel, Leatherette & Cloth, and Android Auto as standard equipment this year. The Avalon has been known to be Toyota’s non-Lexus Lexus if that makes any sense. That being said, the model is a huge departure from the Avalon as Toyota reimagined the full-size sedan for the crossover era. As a result, it features crossover-inspired styling cues such as plastic body cladding and a raised ride height. Meet the 2023 Toyota Avalon, a new high-riding sedan with the shape of a hatchback (though it has a conventional trunk), hybrid-only powertrains, and truly funky styling. Toyota often plays it too safe with its new vehicles, so it’s nice to see the company swinging for the fences with the Avalon.
The 2023 Toyota Avalon debuted with the ride height of a crossover, the proportions of a full-size sedan, and a pair of hybrid powertrains. Consider it an Avalon for a new generation. Every Avalon will feature a hybrid powertrain and all-wheel drive. The base system in XLE and Limited models pairs a 2.5-liter inline-4 with front and rear electric motors, though Toyota hasn’t said yet how much power the system produces. The all-wheel-drive system will be capable of varying torque between 100/0 and 20/80 front to rear. Fuel economy estimates reach 38 mpg combined, which is significantly higher than the outgoing AWD Avalon’s 28 mpg combined. Drive modes will include Eco, Normal, Sport, and an EV setting that enables short periods of all-electric driving.Fancy Platinum models get a 2.4-liter turbo-4 mated with two electric motors for a total system output of 340 hp. Paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission, this grade is estimated to achieve only 28 mpg combined. Those electric motors can vary the torque split between a 70/30 front bias and a 20/80 rear bias. The turbocharged powertrain loses the base car’s EV drive mode but gains Sport+, Comfort, and Custom modes.
While the Avalon might not be a reskinned Avalon it sure feels like it could be. Based on Toyota’s New Global Architecture (TNGA-K), the Avalon sports a 112.2-inch wheelbase, 194-inch overall length, and 72.4-inch width that all nearly match up to the full-size sedan’s dimensions in all but one category: height. The Avalon is 60.6-inches tall, which is about four inches higher than both the Avalon and Camry. Toyota won’t discuss ground clearance yet, but spokesperson Paul Hoggard told Motor Authority it’s comparable to the Camry. The Camry has 5.7 inches of ground clearance while the outgoing Avalon had 5.3 inches of ground clearance. The MacPherson front struts pair with a multi-link rear independent suspension. Lower-level XLE and Limited trims will ride on 19-inch wheels while high-zoot Platinum models pair adaptive dampers with 21-inch wheels. Those large wheels will be an option on the Limited with the Advanced Tech Package. If you’re not quite sure how to classify the 2023 Toyota Avalon, don’t worry. Toyota isn’t either. The teaser video asked “Sedan or SUV?” while the press release refers to it as a “premium sedan” with a “higher ride-height design.” We’re inclined to call it a “sport utility sedan,” with the Avalon’s look bringing to mind the Subaru Legacy SUS of the late ’90s and the Volvo S60 Cross Country. Whatever the Avalon may be, it’s effectively the replacement for the Avalon, which bows out after 2022, and it trades the Avalon’s staid demeanor for a flashy new design, two hybrid powertrain options, and standard all-wheel-drive.
The 2023 Avalon debuts with three trim levels. Powering the XLE and Limited is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine paired with three electric motors powered by a new nickel-metal-hydride battery pack. This is Toyota’s familiar hybrid setup, with two motors and the internal-combustion engine joined together via a planetary gearset that allows for continuously variable ratio adjustment as it sends power to the front wheels. Plus, there’s a third electric motor that motivates the rear wheels, giving the Avalon all-wheel drive. Toyota claims this setup produces 236 horsepower and will achieve a combined 38 mpg. This hybrid system also has an EV mode that permits electric-only driving over short distances at low speeds. This reinterpretation of the Japanese classic is shaped like a high-riding, a boldly styled sedan that wants to play in the same league as those SUVs everyone is crazy about. While cargo space is not yet specified, the Avalon shares its TNGA-K platform with other Toyota cars and crossovers. It comes standard with electronic AWD and a newly designed suspension with a multi-link setup in the rear, plus 19- or 21-inch wheels depending on the model.
In XLE and Limited trim, the 2023 Toyota Avalon combines a naturally aspirated 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine with two electric motors and a CVT. Output is 236 horsepower, and Toyota says that torque split can vary from 100-0 to 20-80 depending on the conditions. Fuel consumption is just 6.2 L/100 km.Meanwhile, the top-line Platinum model with Hybrid MAX technology uses a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine (delivering peak torque from 2,000-3,000 rpm) along with two electric motors. The combination produces 340 horsepower, while a more advanced AWD system adjusts torque distribution from 70-30 to 20-80. Here, fuel consumption amounts to 8.4 L/100 km.Upgrading to the Platinum trim brings what Toyota dubs “Hybrid Max,” a new hybrid system with a 2.4-liter turbocharged inline-four hybrid powertrain mated to a six-speed automatic transmission, with a wet multi-plate clutch sandwiched between the engine and the gearbox, taking the place of a standard torque converter (like Mercedes-AMG does). An electric motor adds extra horsepower and torque and increases the responsiveness of the powertrain. Like the base hybrid system, another electric motor sits on the rear axle, although it is water-cooled and more powerful than the motor in the XLE and Limited.Toyota claims that the Hybrid Max setup makes 340 horsepower, with peak torque from the gas engine arriving between 2000 and 3000 rpm. While the base hybrid operates in front-wheel drive in certain conditions, the Platinum is always in all-wheel-drive mode, sending up to 70 percent of the Avalon’s power to the front wheels or up to 80 percent to the rear wheels.
Fuel economy takes a hit compared with the XLE and Limited, however, with Toyota estimating a combined 28 mpg.The Platinum also gets adaptive dampers, and all Avalons have a strut front suspension and a multilink rear suspension. The Avalon is also fitted with Active Cornering Assist, which uses stability control to minimize understeer in corners. The XLE rides on 19-inch alloy wheels, while the Platinum receives 21-inch 10-spoke wheels with black accents. Every Avalon will come with Toyota’s suite of active safety tech including automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, cross-traffic alerts, adaptive cruise control, active lane control, and blind-spot monitors. Platinum models gain an automatic parking function.
The Avalon has a sleek and simple design. The dashboard is dominated by a 12.3-inch touchscreen and a digital gauge cluster. Thankfully, there is a row of physical buttons beneath the screen to operate the standard dual-zone climate control. The Avalon comes with a wireless charging pad and plenty of USB ports, including two USB-C outlets for the rear passengers. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are supported, and a subscription service for Wi-Fi can provide up to five devices with a 4G connection.
