Porsche announced a reveal date for the GT3 RS, which will make the already bonkers GT3 even more track-focused with revised bodywork and a towering rear wing. We have spied the next-generation Porsche 911 GT3 RS several times already and we know the development work is nearing its completion. A new official teaser image coming from Stuttgart confirms the new range-topping 911 will be ready for its full debut very soon. Porsche plans to unveil the sports car on August 17 this year.
A prototype has been spotted again at the Nürburgring and on some of the German racetrack’s surrounding roads, and it’s devoid of all camouflage gear seen on previous testers.
There’s not much text accompanying the preview image, though, at least, Porsche confirms what will power the vehicle. A 4.0-liter flat-six engine will generate somewhere around 500 horsepower (368 kilowatts). The naturally aspirated mill will reportedly have 520 hp (383 kW) on tap and should be capable of revving to 9,500 rpm.The Porsche 911 GT3 is already a visceral, jaw-droppingly quick track machine. At our annual Lightning Lap competition, the 2022 GT3 made the most of its 502-horsepower 4.0-liter flat-six and sticky Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tires to set a blistering 2:40.6 lap of Virginia International Raceway, placing it seventh in Lightning Lap history. But Porsche is ready to take the GT3 a step further. Today, Porsche announced that the 2023 911 GT3 RS will be revealed on August 17, heralding the return of the Rennsport name that is only worn by Porsche’s most extreme road-legal track toys.“The new 911 GT3 RS is even more optimized for track use than its predecessors. The spontaneously responsive, high-revving four-liter, six-cylinder boxer engine with approximately 500 PS has proven ideal for use at track days and club sport events,” Andreas Preuninger, Director GT Model Line at Porsche, comments. “That’s why we focused primarily on aerodynamics and chassis questions in the development of the new 911 GT3 RS.”Compared to the GT3, the tester for the GT3 RS sports additional vents on the hood and front fenders which look to contain some active elements. There’s also a more aggressive front splitter, new side skirts, and a massive, dual-element rear wing with swan-neck struts. The wing also has an active element. The teaser image shown at the top—along with previously published spy shots—gives a good idea of what to expect from the new GT3 RS. The new track car is said to take inspiration from the 911 RSR and GT3 R race cars, evidenced by its radical new bodywork. Porsche appears to have attacked the sheet metal with a saw, carving out two huge vents on the hood and slashing air outlets over the front wheels. The tape appears to cover up aerodynamic doodads just ahead of and behind the front wheels, while an enormous rear wing sprouts from the rear of the car.The single available teaser image shows us a prototype of the new 911 GT3 RS at what appears to be a section of the Nurburgring. We’ve seen several similar test cars already and we know about some of the visual tweaks compared to the 911 GT3. For example, at the front, a pair of vertical fins on either side of the bumper will be added for improved aerodynamics. Along the side, the hardcore and track-focused 911 receives front fender vents, additional aero behind the front wheel, and an intake in the rear fenders. The GT3 RS prototype also wears Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires measuring 275/35R20 up front and a massive 335/30R21 at the rear. Huge carbon-ceramic brake rotors can also be seen housed within the center-lock wheels. As with earlier iterations of the GT3 RS, we expect the naturally aspirated 4.0-liter flat-six to get a slight bump in power and torque over the GT3; the previous version had an extra 20 hp and 7 pound-feet. The GT3 RS should continue to be rear-wheel drive and will likely come exclusively with the quick-shifting seven-speed PDK automatic transmission.
It’s amazing how much power they can get out of a na 6 cylinder as well as performance that rivals cars with 100-200 more horsepower power will come from a flat-6 mated as standard to a dual-clutch transmission. Peak output in the previous GT3 RS was 520 hp and 346 lb-ft of torque from the same type of engine, and we can expect a slight uptick for the new generation. The engine may be a version of the new 4.2-liter flat-6 powering the recently revealed 911 GT3 R race car. The engine delivers 565 hp in the race car.I’ve always liked Porsche’s staggered tire look.
Recall, that Porsche’s GT3 and GT3 RS are built alongside their motorsport siblings. Can’t wait to see it and read about the various track testing am cashing all my crypto coins and sending in my deposit. Oh wait, maybe Porsche will come up with an even more expensive version of the 911 version by the time my crypto coin money arrives. One element from racing unique to the GT3 and thus also likely on this GT3 RS is a double-wishbone front suspension that’s stiffer and more stable with fewer body movements under braking compared to the MacPherson strut used in other 911 variants.
