Toyota Hilux EV 2023

One of the most popular small pickup trucks worldwide is the Toyota Hilux, a compact truck that is not yet available in the United States. The Hilux, now in its eighth generation, is available with a variety of four- and six-cylinder engines based on the region. Although a battery-powered model appears to be on the horizon, there has never been a model that is entirely electric. And this is not just a hunch or a rumor; Toyota recently unveiled a prototype of an electric Hilux truck, possibly pointing to a forthcoming production model.

A massive celebration was held to mark the 60th anniversary of the Japanese manufacturer’s operations in Thailand. Toyota unveiled the so-called Hilux Revo BEV Concept for the first time as part of the celebrations, despite the fact that the zero-emissions truck had not yet been fully developed. Unconfirmed rumors and a single official image are all we currently have.  

Akio Toyoda, President and CEO of Toyota Motor Corporation, showed the concept truck on stage and hinted that at least some of the work on the EV truck was done in Thailand, where the Hilux is a hugely popular vehicle. Toyoda, be that as it may, didn’t give specialized determinations to the battery-fueled truck, what imparted the stage to the IMV 0 Idea, a light business vehicle model. It’s interesting to note that, in his speech, Toyoda stated, "BEVs are not the only way to achieve the world’s carbon neutrality goals."

After receiving funding for the development of zero-emission vehicles from the UK Government through the Advanced Propulsion Centre (APC), Toyota also recently announced that it has begun work on a hydrogen-powered Hilux. Using its own hydrogen technology from the second generation, Toyota will transform an existing Hilux truck into a fuel-cell electric vehicle. Other details are scarce at this time. The Mirai’s hydrogen powertrain can be found under the hood, and in the Hilux FCEV, the fuel cell stack will take the place of the conventional internal combustion engine in the engine bay.
