The BMW 4 Series is the automakers mainstream two-door model, slotting between BMW coupes on either side of the size and price spectrums. Upon its introduction, the 4 Series replaced the 3 Series coupe and convertible in name but occupied the same space in BMWs lineup. Like its 3 Series counterpart is among sport sedans, the 4 Series is a benchmark against which rival coupes are compared. To understand the roots of the BMW 4 Series, one has to first understand the 3 Series. Thats because the 4 is essentially a 3 with a couple of doors missing—and then, in some cases, added back in (more on that later).
That detail dominated the conversation around the 4 Series, which otherwise became more powerful, luxurious, and high-tech. Again, it rode on a wheelbase identical to the 3 Series, but its body was lower and longer than before. The I-6 engine in the M440i was supplemented by mild hybridization, although no standard 4 Series was offered with a manual transmission. Drivers insisting on three pedals would have to choose the sporty M4, which was now offered in Competition spec for more power and poise, as well as with all-wheel drive. The 4 Series very purpose is ostensibly to replace the 3 Series coupe, and as such its been offered in two-door coupe and convertible body styles. However, confusingly, its also sold as a four-door fastback which overlaps with the 3 Series sedan. That car, the 4 Series Gran Coupe, is styled and equipped like other 4 Series models but has rear doors and a hatchback cargo area that improve its practicality. So, yes, the two-door version of the four-door car is also available as a four-door, and wears a 4 badge.BMW is on a mission to electrify its lineup, and toward that goal, it created the i4. The vehicle is in many ways essentially a battery-powered version of the 4 Series Gran Coupe, with nearly identical looks and appointments. Given these similarities, its possible that i4 coupe and convertibles, or 4 Series plug-in hybrid powertrains, will debut in the future.Quick and capable as the first-generation M4 was, serious performance enthusiasts demanded more. As such BMW created the M4 GTS for 2016. Although its fundamentals were similar to the M4, the GTS was enhanced with adjustable suspension, more aerodynamic downforce, less weight, and more power. That final attribute was partially due to an unusual water injection system, which piped distilled water stored in a tank in the trunk into the engine. Specifically, at higher engine revolutions water was sprayed into the intake plenum, which cooled the post-intercooler air to provide a denser charge entering the cylinders. The result was 493 hp, up from 444 hp in the M4 equipped with the Competition package. Only 700 copies of the M4 GTS were built, some of which were equipped with carbon-fiber wheels.BMW’s entry-luxury coupe and convertible are largely unchanged for 2023, but M Sport brakes with red or blue calipers are now a part of the optional Shadowline appearance package. The Premium package no longer includes BMW’s gimmicky gesture controls for the infotainment system, and the optional head-up display is now only available on top-spec M440i models. A Parking Assistance package has been added to the options sheet, and all models now come with a faux-leather dashboard cover. BMW updated the 3 Series family earlier this week, introducing a new smoother face and giving the compact premium model a huge tech boost. As of the previous generation, the 3 Series no longer includes a coupe version as it is now part of the 4 Series family, though the two lineups share many components. It would make sense for BMW to also launch a refreshed version of the 4 Series Coupe soon and there’s a new rendering previewing the potential design of this two-door Bimmer. There’s little to suggest the 4 Series Coupe facelift could ditch the giant kidney grilles at the front but X-Tomi Designs vision for the premium coupe proposes a radical new look. The vehicle pictured here has the same front fascia as the refreshed 3 Series family (see the related links below) and we believe many BMW enthusiasts would be happy to see such a move. After all, the previous generation 4 Series in both coupe and convertible forms shared its front-end design with the 3 Series from the same generation. From the drivers seat, theres little that differentiates the 2023 BMW 4-series from the 3-series sedan on which its based, and thats a good thing. But on the outside, the two-door body style and oversize twin-kidney grille give the 4-series a look entirely different from its four-door, 3-series counterpart. Practicality takes a back seat here, literally, as the 4-series rear seat is snug; nor is its trunk as spacious as the 3-series cargo hold. But if anyone cares, they can opt for the 3-series sedan. The 4-series duo is stylish, quick, and refined as youd expect BMWs to be. Whats missing, however, is the brands traditionally sharp handling, especially if you go with the entry-level 430i model, which comes with a turbocharged four-cylinder engine. Opt for the more powerful M440i, which sports a rambunctious turbocharged inline-six, and things get a lot more interesting—but even its backroad moves aren’t as special as we would hope. The 4-series Gran Coupe exists for buyers who want both swoopy styling and four doors, but we review that model separately. Not everyone will love the styling, but its hard to deny the 4 Series performance chops. The compact car is available in three body styles: a two-door coupe and convertible redesigned for 2021 and a Gran Coupe five-door fastback that was overhauled for 2022. Depending on body style and powertrain, the 4 Series competes against everything from the Audi A5 and Acura Integra to the Mercedes-Benz C-Class coupe and Infiniti Q60.If you allow us to give our two cents, we certainly like this slightly more restrained design language compared to the in-the-face look of the current 4 Series. Sure, with the smaller grilles the car doesn’t look nearly as aggressive, though aggression is not always needed in automotive design. A little more friendly design won’t hurt anyone, right?BMW will certainly keep the 4 Series on par with the 3 Series in the tech department, which means the facelifted 4 Series will get the company’s iDrive 8 infotainment system. In the facelifted 3er, the driver gets 12.3 inches of digital real estate for vital information, with another 14.9-inch screen positioned in the center of the dashboard and providing infotainment functions 2023 BMW 4 Series Coupe entices with exceptional dynamics and expressive design. Models designated 430i are powered by a 255-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder. The M440i is powered by a silky-smooth turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six that gains an assist from a 48-volt hybrid system to make 382-hp. The 4-series provides a sporty driving experience, courtesy of a retuned suspension, a more-aggressive steering calibration, a wider rear track, and a lower center of gravity than the 3-series sedan. Still, we tested the M440i coupe and came away less impressed with its driving character than its terrific inline-six. Apart from strong brakes that performed well in our 70-to-zero-mph test (149 feet), the Bimmers distant steering and the compliant ride didnt deliver the same satisfaction we got from the M340i sedan. During our test drive of an all-wheel drive 430i xDrive model, we noted decent power from the turbocharged four-cylinder but came away with a similar complaint about the cars too-soft suspension. The EPA estimates the four-cylinder 430i coupe will earn 26 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway. Adding all-wheel drive into the equation drops those figures to 24 and 33 mpg, respectively. The six-cylinder M440i is rated at 22 mpg city and 31 highway. We havent tested the M440i model on our 75-mph highway fuel economy route, but the 430i xDrive delivered 34 mpg over the 200-mile test. For more information about the 4-seriess fuel economy, visit the EPAs website.Shoppers may not notice much difference between the cabins of the 4-series and the 3-series unless theyre in the back seat. The dashboard layout, interior materials, and primary controls look to be identical to the four-door 3-series, although we noticed that the lower roofline in the 4-series gives it a less spacious feel. Trunk space is less generous here than in the 3-series, especially in the convertible model; in our testing, we fit five carry-on suitcases in the trunk of the coupe model, one less than in the 3-series sedan. The 2023 4-series comes with the same standard 8.8-inch and optional 10.3-inch infotainment screens as the 3-series sedan. Both displays run the latest version of BMWs iDrive 7 infotainment software, which pairs an intuitive interface with a console-mounted click wheel controller for easy use while driving; those who prefer to interact with the display directly can do since both are touchscreens. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and in-dash navigation will all be standard while a 12.3-inch digital gauge display, onboard Wi-Fi, and a wireless smartphone charging pad are optional extras.BMW offers a host of driver-assistance features as standard with more advanced features available as options.
Key safety features include: Compared to rivals such as the Cadillac CT5 or the Genesis G70 the BMW 4-series standard warranty offerings are fairly basic. BMW makes up for that with a three-year complimentary maintenance plan, whereas the Caddy only offers one free visit. The 2023 BMW 4 Series Coupe is available in three distinct model variants. The 430i and 430i xDrive models include a 2.0-liter BMW TwinPower Turbo inline 4-cylinder gasoline engine that delivers 255 hp.
