Enthusiasts eyeing the fully electric incarnation of the iconic G-Class have a clear agenda: maximize efficiency. After all, the G-Class, with its distinct boxy silhouette, doesn’t exactly scream aerodynamic prowess. But fear not, for the electric G-Class promises to blend familiarity with a slew of aerodynamic enhancements, all in the name of extending its range. What’s more, the expertise garnered from crafting the EQG will spill over into the forthcoming conventional G-Class facelift set for 2024.
Emmerich Schiller, the Director of Mercedes-Benz G GmbH, made this revelation during an interview with Autocar. He confidently assured that the G-Class is in for a "dramatic improvement in aerodynamics," a noteworthy feat considering that these subtle changes may elude even the most eagle-eyed of onlookers. However, these tweaks are poised to deliver a "tremendous reduction in fuel consumption," a boon for eco-conscious adventurers.
Schiller further divulged that the facelifted G-Class will maintain its iconic appearance, whether propelled by a traditional internal combustion engine or an electric motor. In a matter of months, we can anticipate the official debut of the production-ready EQG, specifically in the early months of 2024. In synchrony with this electric offering, the ICE version will undergo its own refresh.
Notably, the 2024 G-Class will bid farewell to the V8-powered G500 model, as the Final Edition bid adieu to this iteration in Europe towards the end of June. The fate of the US-spec G550 remains uncertain as to whether it will also ditch the V8 in the mid-cycle update for the W463 G-Class. However, enthusiasts can take solace in the hope that the eight-cylinder engine will endure, at least for a while longer, in the form of the AMG G63.
