Volkswagen’s Touareg is currently in its third generation, and the current model has been in production for five years. As it is due for a mid-cycle refresh, prototypes of the updated midsize crossover have been spotted testing by spy photographers.

The prototypes of the updated Volkswagen Touareg that have been spotted by spy photographers appear to be completely uncovered, but upon closer inspection, it can be seen that important areas have been covered with stickers. This is a common practice among car manufacturers, including Volkswagen, during testing on public roads. Our colleagues from Kolesa have attempted to remove these stickers to give us a preview of what the facelifted Touareg may look like before its official debut.

The updated Volkswagen Touareg is expected to feature changes to the headlight, grille, and bumper designs. Kolesa’s rendering tries to emulate how the car will be given a more contemporary look. The grille is expected to be slightly larger, and the biggest changes are expected to be in the accents on the bumper. The side profile of the vehicle is not expected to change for this refresh.

At the rear, Kolesa’s rendering shows LED lighting connecting both taillights, which is a common design element among recent vehicles. The taillamp graphics are expected to be different to keep the crossover fresh both front and back.

Updates are also expected to the powertrain of the Volkswagen Touareg. This is because a facelifted model was spotted testing at a dynamometer. The most powerful version of the Touareg is currently powered by a turbocharged 3.0-liter engine combined with an electric motor which produces a maximum output of 456 horsepower (340 kilowatts) and 516 pound-feet (700 Newton-meters) of torque.

It’s possible that there may be further electrification in the updated Touareg, but this is not confirmed. However, the crossover will retain its 4Motion all-wheel-drive system with a Torsen center differential lock. The eight-speed automatic torque converter gearbox will also be retained in the refreshed model.
