According to insights from the Austrian publication Kleine Zeitung via Automotive News, the German automotive giant has tapped into the engineering prowess of the Austrian firm to craft new models for Scout, an autonomous subsidiary within the VW Group.

In a significant move, VW reportedly sealed a deal with Magna Steyr, involving a substantial order valued at 450 million euros (approximately $493 million) for the development of electric pickups and SUVs. This marks a pivotal moment for Magna Steyr, securing its most substantial development contract to date and signaling a departure from VW’s earlier decision to keep the Scout brand exclusively American.

The Scout brand, eyeing a transformative journey, aims to unveil two novel models by the conclusion of 2026. These models are expected to be built upon the foundation of the Group’s cutting-edge Scalable Systems Platform (SSP).

Magna Steyr, already a player in the electric vehicle arena, boasts the creation of the Fisker Ocean, a recent entrant in the U.S. electric car market. Additionally, the company spearheads the development and production of the electric Mercedes-Benz G-Class, further bolstering its engineering expertise. Noteworthy vehicles in its portfolio include the Toyota GR Supra, BMW Z4, and Jaguar I-Pace.

As Volkswagen prepares for the expansion of the standalone Scout brand within the United States, its base location, the question remains whether Magna Steyr will take charge of the production of Scout models. In a prior announcement, the VW Group disclosed a $2 billion investment for the construction of an assembly plant in South Carolina, covering an extensive 1,600 acres just 20 miles north of Columbia.

In the fiercely competitive landscape of electric trucks, the Scout EV is gearing up to face formidable contenders such as the Ford F-150 Lightning and GMC Hummer EV. Meanwhile, Tesla, a prominent player in the electric vehicle space, is set to commence deliveries of the long-anticipated Cybertruck this month, four years after its distinctive wedge-shaped design was unveiled.

With the collaboration between VW and Magna Steyr, the stage appears to be set for Scout to make a resounding impact in the market in the years to come.
