In a stunning move four years ago, Lexus pulled the curtain back on the LM at Auto Shanghai 2019, taking the world by surprise. The vehicle was an upscale version of the Toyota Alphard designed for the Chinese market, where opulent minivans have a significant market share, as not everyone wants to drive an ostentatious SUV or ride in one as a passenger. Next week, at the same show in the People’s Republic, an "all-new" LM will make its official debut, and Lexus is keeping quiet about the details.

However, the teaser image next to the announcement hints that it’s a second-generation model rather than a facelifted Alphard dressed in a tuxedo. By comparing it to the outgoing model, we can see that the back pillar has a different design, and the outline of the taillight is altered, while the quarter glass on the new model appears slightly smaller.

The upcoming LM, which will compete against the Buick GL8 Century, is an MPV (Multi-Purpose Vehicle), according to Lexus, not a minivan, or at least that’s what they want us to believe. It remains to be seen if it will be a separate model from the Alphard, or if the 2024 LM is a preview of Toyota’s fourth-generation minivan. The Alphard minivan has been in production since 2015, with a facelift in 2018, so a revamped version is long overdue.

In China, these luxury minivans can become quite expensive, with some models costing over $200,000 for a four-seat LM with all the bells and whistles. The Buick GL8 Century can also reach six figures if you choose all the options.

China’s populace, the world’s most populous, enjoys an abundance of options when it comes to luxury vehicles, including premium SUVs, minivans, and even extended wheelbase sedans built by various international luxury brands. In the competitive Chinese market, domestic automakers are rapidly catching up, with even extended SUVs in production.

The Auto Shanghai 2023 is set to begin on April 18th, with the first press day, and concludes on April 27th, with the final public day.
