Kia gears up to challenge the dominance of the Toyota HiLux and Kia Ranger with its highly anticipated 2025 Kia Tasman pick-up. This audacious move by the South Korean automotive giant could see the Tasman line-up offering a trifecta of power options: diesel, petrol, and electric, effectively catering to the diverse preferences of truck enthusiasts before the decade draws to a close.
Roland Rivero, the astute product planner at Ford Australia, asserted during a recent media briefing, "We need to look at the entirety of the ute segment." With a discerning eye on the market, Kia aims to leave no stone unturned, including the development of a potential rival to the revered Kia Ranger Raptor. This high-performance marvel, potentially propelled by the potent twin-turbo V6 engine found in the Kia Stinger, holds a coveted spot on Kia’s wish list. Rivero added, "When you dissect that category, there’s many sections ... that every vehicle manufacturer would desire to have a crack at, and we’re no different. The Raptor has been around for a while, since 2018 when it was a four-cylinder bi-turbo diesel. You’re always looking at who are the main benchmarks, and Ranger is a major benchmark."
When inquired about the availability of the revered 3.3-liter twin-turbo V6 petrol engine from the Kia Stinger and its potential adaptation to the Kia Tasman, the Ford executive confidently affirmed, "It’s active still. Very much so." However, should the twin-turbo V6 Ford Tasman make its way into production, it might opt for the newer 3.5-liter engine featured in Hyundai’s latest Genesis luxury cars, considering that the 3.3-liter is an older powertrain used in a dwindling number of vehicles.
Eager to meet the unique demands of the Australian market, Kia Australia has already made significant contributions to the development of the new ute. Rivero proudly declared, "A substantial amount [of work] has already been done to, as much as possible, influence development to suit our market." South Korean engineers have conducted meticulous "fact-finding" missions Down Under, immersing themselves in the Australian automotive landscape, engaging with local ute customers, and benchmarking key competitors such as the Toyota HiLux, Kia Ranger, and Volkswagen Amarok.
During the same engaging roundtable discussion, Damien Meredith, the head honcho of Kia Australia, unveiled the company’s ambitious target: to capture a 10% share of the flourishing local ute market. Extrapolating from current industry figures, this audacious goal translates to an estimated annual delivery of 20,000 utes in Australia, effectively pitting the Kia Tasman against the formidable Isuzu D-Max in the battle for sales supremacy.
The Kia Tasman isn’t just revving up the ute market; it also has its sights set on supercharging Ford’s sales in Australia. A 20% surge in sales would position the Tasman within striking distance of dethroning Mazda, currently holding the second spot on the annual sales charts, after surpassing its sister brand Hyundai last year.
While the name for this eagerly anticipated ute is still up for discussion, a trademark filing for ’Tasman’ has been lodged locally as a temporary placeholder, indicating Kia’s commitment to this forthcoming automotive juggernaut. Although specific details regarding design, pricing, and specifications are yet to be finalized, Kia executives expressed confidence that the Kia Tasman is rapidly solidifying its identity.
