Just a few days ago, trademark filings peeled back the curtain on the forthcoming BMW 5 Series Touring wagon, revealing its design in a monochromatic haze. While the grayscale images left much to the imagination, they did offer a tantalizing glimpse into the overall stylistic essence, drawing strong parallels to the 5 Series sedan that made its grand entrance in May.
However, the artistic community couldn’t resist injecting some much-needed vibrancy into the scene. Enter a fresh set of unofficial renderings, which take the liberty to paint the wagon in the striking hues of M Performance. In this reimagined world, the 5 Series dons sportier bumpers and wears its badging with a sense of pride.
The most conspicuous transformation graces the bumpers of the wagon in these renderings. The front end showcases bold black trims, outlining the lower grille opening with a distinct, assertive flair - a feature that gains even more prominence in the M Performance iteration. The outboard intakes are also bedecked in glossy black trim, adding a touch of aggressive sophistication.
Shifting our gaze to the rear, we find a sporty bumper design embracing the rear marker lights in striking triangular configurations, bearing a striking resemblance to its M Performance sedan counterpart. The wagon also boasts a lower stance on its suspension, hinting at its sportier demeanor and potentially larger dimensions compared to its current-generation counterpart. Notably, the 5 Series sedan grew by 3.4 inches in length and 1.3 inches in width, a change that bodes well for the wagon’s cargo-carrying capabilities.
Under the hood, BMW intends to offer an array of powertrain options for the 5 Series. The base 530i sedan in the US will be powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, churning out a robust 255 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. Stepping up to the 540i, which is exclusively available with all-wheel drive, drivers will enjoy the brand’s signature straight-six engine, delivering an impressive 375 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque.
However, the excitement doesn’t end there. BMW enthusiasts will be pleased to know that the 5 Series Touring will come in a full-throttle M variant. Our eagle-eyed spy photographers have even caught it in the act at the Nurburgring. While specific powertrain details remain shrouded in mystery, all signs point to it inheriting the hybrid powertrain from the formidable XM SUV. This electrified V8 powerhouse boasts an astonishing 735 hp and a jaw-dropping 737 lb-ft of torque, setting the stage for the wagon to deliver an equally awe-inspiring 718 hp. Buckle up, folks; the next-generation BMW 5 Series Touring promises an exhilarating journey ahead.
