Audi S5 Avant 2024

As Ingolstadt looks toward an electric future, the Four Rings are preparing for one last hurrah of performance vehicles. Although the TT and R8 are being retired with no direct successors in sight, a few exciting models with S and RS badges will soon arrive to serve as a farewell to the internal combustion engine. One of these vehicles has recently been spotted by our intrepid spies based in northern Europe.

This hot luxury wagon, rumored to be transitioning to the S5 Avant moniker (a bit confusing, we know), was caught up close and personal, looking almost production-ready. Sporting final headlights and taillights, as well as all body panels, the S variant features quad exhaust tips flanking a tow bar, making it impossible to miss.

A refreshing change of pace, the smaller front grille is now separated from the lower air intake, and the Quattro-esque horizontal slat above the grille appears to be gone. This prototype boasts intricate matrix LED headlights and vertical air curtains in the corners of the bumper.

With skinnier tires, larger wheels, and the typically red brake calipers, the new S4/S5 Avant promises to be a handsome performance wagon. However, there have been no spy shots of the sedan in S or standard guise to date. Some sources speculate that Audi’s yet-to-be-confirmed decision to transition the A4 to the A5 lineup may lead to the discontinuation of the sedan. While there is already an A5 Sportback, it is not yet official whether or not the A4 Sedan will be phased out.

The powertrain for the new S4/S5 Avant remains a mystery. Will it retain the 3.0-liter V6 engine, or will Audi opt for a downsized engine, as Mercedes-AMG has done with the C63 Estate? Some form of electrification is expected, at least a mild-hybrid 48V system, if not a PHEV setup.

Regardless of the powertrain, this will be the last combustion engine-powered vehicle of its kind from Audi. The company plans to launch only electric vehicles from 2026, and has announced its intention to end production of ICE-powered cars by 2033, with a possible exception in China, depending on local demand. The future may be electric, but for now, the Four Rings are set to offer a few more exciting rides for those who still love the roar of a combustion engine.
