Audi is bidding a stylish farewell to its iconic R8 model, culminating in the release of the GT RWD limited to just 333 coupes. However, for those seeking an even more extraordinary driving experience, ABT Sportsline has unleashed the XGT – a supercar that transcends the ordinary. Essentially a road-legal R8 GT2, this automotive marvel breathes new life into the naturally aspirated machine, with Audi generously providing 99 rolling chassis to the German company for this ambitious project.

Much like its R8 GT RWD counterpart, the ABT XGT channels the V10’s power exclusively to the rear wheels. Yet, the XGT takes it up a notch, boasting a formidable 630 horsepower from the 5.2 FSI engine, surpassing Audi’s final salute to the R8 with its "mere" 612 horsepower. Shedding the Quattro and incorporating copious amounts of carbon fiber has resulted in an impressively lightweight figure of 3,086 pounds (1,400 kilograms), a significant 375 pounds (170 kilograms) lighter than the R8 GT RWD.

The journey to create the XGT was no small feat, as ABT invested two years in its development, overcoming hurdles and securing approval from 40 key decision-makers. The result is not just a supercar dressed up as a race car; it is, in essence, a bona fide race car with a license plate. The distinction is palpable upon entering the stripped-down cabin, complete with a full roll cage and the identical steering wheel found in the authentic GT2 race car. Despite its track-oriented origins, ABT has equipped the XGT for road legality, incorporating central locking, a rearview camera, and a handbrake, along with a conventional digital instrument cluster.

Under the hood, tweaks to thermal management, software, braking, and the fueling system have been executed, all while staying true to the GT2 pedigree. Ensuring compliance with road regulations, ABT has introduced modifications to the exhaust system for emissions adherence and noise level conformity. Depending on the angle of its prominent rear wing, the XGT can achieve a top speed of 193 mph (310 km/h).

In terms of aesthetics, ABT offers the XGT in four standard colors, yet the customization options don’t end there. The hardcore R8 rides on 19-inch front and 20-inch rear forged wheels equipped with Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R tires, complemented by an 83-liter (21.9-gallon) fuel tank.
