Reports suggest that Hyundai is set to announce a production version of its Hyundai Pony Coupe concept vehicle later this month. The car is a homage to the original Hyundai Pony Coupe and debuted in December 2022. It was designed to be a futuristic rolling lab that paid homage to the company’s heritage. Since its unveiling, many have been hoping for a production model, not only because of its impressive looks but because it offers a glimpse into the future of performance EVs with character.

Money Today, a South Korean publication, reports that Hyundai is planning a special "Pony Day" event on May 27th at its Seoul design studio. The event will celebrate the company’s first mass-produced automobile, the Pony, and will also be the platform for an official announcement regarding the N Vision 74’s production variant.

The original Pony heavily influenced the design of the Ioniq 5 electric crossover, and the Hyundai Pony Coupe takes its inspiration from the three-door liftback version of the Pony. The N Vision 74 does not use pure electrification; instead, it has a hydrogen fuel-cell system combined with twin electric motors and a 62.4-kWh battery, generating a combined 679 horsepower and 663 lb-ft of torque, all sent to the rear wheels exclusively (the original Pony was also RWD).

Hyundai executives have expressed their dream of building a Hyundai supercar, and a production version of the N Vision 74 could be a step in that direction. While it remains to be seen if the performance fuel-cell powertrain will make it into the production model, there are talks of a performance car carrying a six-figure price tag.

While a six-figure Hyundai may be a gamble, Hyundai may reduce costs by leveraging the technology in other high-end products. Reports suggest that Genesis is planning a high-end GT car that could use the Genesis GT90 moniker. If the GT90 shared a platform and powertrain with a new N-badged Pony Coupe, it would allow Hyundai to make it more marketable to various audiences, increasing the prospective sales volumes and reducing costs.
