Latest Update: 2023 Hyundai Mufasa is going to launch in April 2023, with an expected price of $20,000.

The Chinese automotive market is always fascinating due to the incredible number of new models that are launched every year. One of the major players in the market is Beijing Hyundai Motor Co, a joint venture between Hyundai and BAIC, which sells a range of vehicles including sedans, crossovers, and a minivan. One of their older models, the ix35, is expected to be replaced by their new compact crossover, the Mufasa.

While the Mufasa is scheduled to make its public debut at Auto Shanghai 2023 next week, Beijing Hyundai has already released official images of the vehicle on Weibo, a Chinese social media network. The images reveal a sleek, edgy design that is similar to the Tucson, with intricate vertical headlights and cylindrical taillights that set it apart from other compact crossovers.

While Hyundai has yet to reveal the technical specifications of the Mufasa, they were indirectly announced when the vehicle was homologated by China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. According to the MIIT website, the compact crossover is 176.1 inches (4475 millimeters) long, 72.8 in (1850 mm) wide, and 65.5 in (1665 mm) tall, which is similar to the short-wheelbase Tucson sold in Europe. The Mufasa has a wheelbase of 105.5 in (2680 mm) and a curb weight of 3,227 pounds (1,464 kilograms).

The same document revealed that the Mufasa will be powered by an old-school 2.0-liter naturally aspirated engine with 160 horsepower, which will be channeled exclusively to the front wheels. Local media reports suggest that the Mufasa may also be offered with a hybrid setup later on, possibly with a 48V mild-hybrid configuration, but nothing has been confirmed.

After its public debut at Auto Shanghai, the Mufasa will go on sale in China shortly thereafter. There is no word yet on whether the model will be sold in other markets. As for the name of the vehicle, it takes its inspiration from Simba’s father in Disney’s 1994 animated classic, The Lion King.
