As part of the SUV’s homologation process, the redesigned Ford Edge made an early appearance on the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology website in China in August 2022. At the end of last month, we saw it once more undergoing cold-weather testing while covered in a bright wrap. The family car is making its official debut in China, where it is known as the Edge L. On the inside as well as the outside, it looks very different from its predecessor.
The Edge L is technically the Edge Plus’s replacement and features a three-low layout with two, two, and three seats. It is probably larger than the Equator, another locally available SUV, as you can probably tell. In fact, it is a majestic 196.9 inches (5,000 millimeters) in length, 77.2 inches (1,961 millimeters) wide, and 69.8 inches (1,773 millimeters) tall. It has a wheelbase of 2,950 millimeters (116.1 inches) and can drive on alloy wheels as big as 21 inches.
The Edge L has a wide LED strip that is connected to the daytime running lights to create a unibrow effect because it appears to be a requirement for nearly all cars today to have a light bar. It comes equipped with door handles that pop out and has an impressively large front grille. When the first images first appeared on the MIIT website, we noticed that the beltline is particularly odd—it rises abruptly in front of the C-pillar and then gradually descends after it.
The transition from the C to the D pillars is very strange, and the former pillars have an "L" logo on them. The 2024 Ford Edge L has a "floating roof" because the upper body is finished in black, in addition to the light bar that was mentioned earlier. The prominent "EDGE" lettering below the Blue Oval is where the rear light signature is repeated.
The interior is equally fascinating, particularly the dashboard with its ample screen space. Similar to other Ford vehicles sold in China, such as the Evos and Explorer facelift, this vehicle features a massive 27-inch touchscreen in addition to a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. Ambient lighting, a head-up display, a Bang & Olufsen sound system, and a huge panoramic sunroof are all included in the amenities. Captain’s chairs in the second row that recline, as well as up to twenty advanced systems for driving assistance.
The gasoline engine in the Edge L is a turbocharged 2.0-liter unit that produces 249 horsepower and 279 lb-ft (378 Nm) of torque. The seven-seat SUV from Ford will also be offered as a self-charging hybrid with 271 horsepower and nearly 300 lb-ft (405 Nm) of torque. Both have all-wheel drive and an automatic transmission. The hybrid model can travel up to 738 miles (1,188 kilometers) with full gas tank and fully charged battery.
Although the gasoline-powered Ford Edge L is scheduled to go on sale at the 2023 Auto Shanghai in the second half of April, it has not yet made an appearance at a Chinese auto show. In July, the hybrid will arrive.
