Volkswagen has finally unveiled the highly anticipated long wheelbase variant of its ID. Buzz 3-Row electric microbus, and it’s set to make its way to the US next year. With a power output of 282hp (compared to the previous 201hp, and even available in a dual-motor configuration delivering 330hp), a top speed of 99 mph (up from 90 mph), a larger battery capacity of 91kWh (previously 82kWh), and an additional 10 inches in length, this microbus is ready to roll. Another notable feature is the inclusion of an openable rear window, which was missing in the two-row version.
The 10-inch extension in length is entirely attributed to the elongated wheelbase, making the three-row ID. Buzz a substantial 2 feet longer than Volkswagen’s original microbus, which measured 168 inches in length. This expansion translates to a more spacious interior, catering to both passengers and cargo. While the extra row of seats claims some of the added space, the second row conveniently folds flat, and the third row can be removed entirely (Canadian customers will have access to a unique long-wheelbase, two-row version without the third row, perfect for those seeking additional room).
Having experienced the ID. Buzz firsthand at the unveiling event, it was abundantly clear that space was not in short supply. With a height of 6 feet in the second row and a VW dealer representative measuring 6’3" seated behind, neither of us encountered any spatial limitations. In fact, up to six adults should find ample comfort, and with a little creativity, even a seventh person could squeeze in (provided they possess a slender frame). While Volkswagen plans to introduce a 6-seat option, it has yet to be revealed.
The longer wheelbase also accommodates an additional 9kWh of battery capacity. Although the specific range of the three-row version has not been officially announced, the European specification boasts 263 miles on the WLTP cycle. However, it’s important to note that the North American specification, despite having a larger battery, is also lengthier and heavier. Consequently, the EPA mileage estimates are anticipated to be significantly lower than the WLTP estimates, making it challenging to pinpoint an exact figure. Volkswagen has indicated a range somewhere between 200-300 miles.
In terms of charging capability, the two-row version supports 170kW charging. However, Volkswagen representatives have hinted that the larger battery in the long wheelbase model may enable even faster charging speeds, possibly reaching around 200kW.
While Volkswagen has only explicitly provided information about the impressive drag coefficient of 0.29 for the Buzz, labeling it as "very good for a vehicle of this shape" (resembling a brick), other efficiency-related details remain scarce. Nonetheless, it’s clear that the ID. Buzz aims to strike a balance between spaciousness, power, and environmental consciousness.
