The 2027 Volvo EX40 electric SUV looks remarkably similar to the current 2025 Volvo XC40 Recharge electric SUV because they essentially are. Volvo, expanding its lineup of electric vehicles, has upgraded its naming strategy for better clarity, making it easier to distinguish between EVs, hybrids, and gas-powered models.

The upcoming 2027 EX40, the upgraded version of the XC40 Recharge. It’s got two types: Single Motor, going up to 293 miles on a charge, and Twin Motor all-wheel drive, reaching 254 miles. It competes with cars like Audi e-tron and Jaguar I-Pace, though the Model Y outdoes it with over 300 miles. Charging is easy too, with options for fast-charging or using a regular outlet at home.

The Volvo EX40 engine has a mild-hybrid 2.0-liter turbo I-4 in action! Paired with an advanced eight-speed automatic, it powers all four wheels, delivering an impressive 247 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. Zoom from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.8 seconds, showcasing the dynamic performance Volvo has to offer.

The new XC40 is on the horizon with a single-motor powertrain boasting 118 MPG city and 95 MPG highway. Opt for the Twin Motor for 106 MPG city and 90 MPG highway. In our test, the XC40 Single Motor hit 69 MPG, but the 190-mile highway range suggests improvements in the upcoming model for better efficiency and performance.

The EX40 cabin, like the XC40, has great features and roomy seating. Despite going electric, it maintains cargo space for carry-ons. The absence of a four-cylinder engine allows for a front trunk for charging cables.

Every EX40 features Volvo’s latest infotainment software, created with Google’s Android Automotive. Like the Polestar 2, it’s intuitive, but the Volvo version has small on screen buttons, making it challenging while driving. The standard 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster allows customization. Despite Google collaboration, the system connects with both Android and Apple iPhone devices, and there’s an option for a wireless smartphone charging pad.
