When Mini unveiled its latest Cooper hatchback in September, the spotlight was on the fully electric 3-Door model. Yet, these clandestine snapshots serve as a reminder that a more pragmatic 5-Door variant, fueled by combustion engines, is still in the works. This model marks a poignant finale, as the BMW-owned brand has committed to a complete electric transition by the decade’s end, making this the ultimate generation of the hatch to feature petrol engines.
The prototypes are shedding their camouflage, and this verdant test vehicle seems poised to shed its disguise, unveiling a design ready for production. Having gleaned insights from the 3-Door sibling, the additional pair of doors on the 5-Door will inevitably influence the greenhouse and overall aesthetics. The absence of a discernible exhaust tip suggests that this might be a base model rather than the more spirited Cooper S, let alone the top-tier John Cooper Works range.
While the exterior remains quintessentially Mini, the interior is set for a substantial transformation. Drawing inspiration from the new electric hatchback and the expansive Countryman, the dashboards will embrace simplicity, discarding the traditional instrument cluster. In these covert images, the lack of a driver’s display is evident, with only a sleek head-up display on the horizon. Adjacent to it resides a central OLED circular display, spanning 9.4 inches, where the driver will wield control over most functions.
It’s noteworthy that Mini plans to offer both the 3-Door and 5-Door hatchbacks with combustion engines, but the fully electric drivetrain is reserved exclusively for the former. Production of the electric vehicle has shifted away from Mini’s homeland in the UK, finding a new home in China through the joint venture, Spotlight Automotive, formed with Great Wall Motor. This collaboration will be the sole producer of the electric hatch until 2026, when Mini’s Oxford plant is set to commence production.
Nestled between the 5-Door hatch and the recently introduced Countryman will be the Aceman, a subcompact crossover slated to hit the market next year. Distinctly, it will only be available as an electric vehicle, produced alongside the emission-free hatch in China. From 2026 onward, both models will roll off the assembly line in Oxford.
