BMW has just dropped the exciting news that the forthcoming spring will bring Level 3 driving assistance to the esteemed BMW 7 Series. Eager enthusiasts can start placing their orders in December, with the first batch of these cutting-edge vehicles set to hit the roads in March 2024. Intriguingly, the Level 3 feature won’t grace the eDrive50 and M70 xDrive models, limiting its availability exclusively to the eDrive60 drivetrain.

As of now, BMW provides Level 2 automated driving, boasting features like automatic lane changes and adaptive cruise control. While this allows drivers to momentarily relinquish control, it’s crucial to remain vigilant and monitor the road. Operating at speeds up to 130 km/h, this technology is not exclusive to the 7 Series; it’s also available in the BMW 5 Series.

Level 3 automated driving, in accordance with the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) standards, elevates the driving experience. Occupants can indulge in various activities within the vehicle, from watching movies to editing emails or participating in conference calls. Importantly, the driver is not held accountable if an incident occurs while the Level 3 system is engaged.

However, there’s a caveat to this automotive marvel. The BMW Personal Pilot L3, as it’s dubbed, functions solely at speeds up to 60 km/h and exclusively on highways. This limitation seems counterintuitive, particularly given that the Personal Pilot L3 will initially be available only in Germany, a country renowned for its high-speed highways.
