In the revamp of the GLE earlier this year, Mercedes gave a boost to the AMG Lite version, cranking up the torque to a hefty 413 lb-ft, while keeping the horsepower steady at 429 hp. But now, as we fast forward nine months, the AMG 53 has undergone a significant makeover, embracing its new identity as a plug-in hybrid in Europe, with the United States set to catch up in 2025. There’s no need for panic, though, as the trusty combustion engine hasn’t downsized to a humdrum four-cylinder, as tragically witnessed with the C63.

The familiar turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine teams up with a zippy 134-hp electric motor, resulting in a combined power surge to 536 hp and an impressive 553 pound-feet (750 Nm) of torque. This hybrid overhaul marks a noteworthy power surge of 107 hp and 140 lb-ft (190 Nm) over the 2024 GLE 53 available stateside. Mercedes is giving both body styles the PHEV treatment, even equipping the "coupe" version with a charging port to juice up its 31.2-kWh battery pack.

With this mighty power boost, the GLE 53 Hybrid hits 0 to 60 mph in a mere 4.6 seconds (down by 0.3s compared to the ICE model), topping out at an electronically capped 155 mph (250 km/h). Mercedes proudly touts the ability to hit 87 mph (140 km/h) without a sip of gasoline. Yet, this does come at a cost, as achieving the WLTP-certified electric range of up to 53 miles (86 kilometers) for the regular GLE 53 and 54 miles (87 kilometers) for the sleeker version becomes unattainable. The EPA range, however, remains a mystery for now.

Sporting 21-inch wheels and an AMG braking system with formidable 400-mm front discs and six-piston calipers, the GLE 53 Hybrid not only flaunts its ’Hybrid’ badges but also boasts subtle aero tweaks that set it apart from its conventionally powered sibling. Additionally, tweaks have been made to the MBUX infotainment system to accommodate the newly acquired hybrid setup.

Taking cues from the GLE 53 Hybrid’s debut, it’s reasonable to assume that the upcoming E53 will benefit from a similar PHEV configuration. Who knows, maybe the CLE 53 will also get a taste of this power package. Regrettably, the CLS 53 is no more, and with it, the non-AMG versions bid adieu, as Mercedes is putting an end to the sleek sedan altogether.
