Latest Update: BMW i Vision Dee concept has revealed, but the car will go on sale in 2025.
The Digital Emotional Experience (Dee) from BMW has been revealed at the 2023 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, unveiling the mystery surrounding the concept car. The Dee serves as a preview for BMW’s next generation of electric vehicles, expected to be released in 2025, and features a minimalist design philosophy. The Dee is a midsize sedan that offers a glimpse into the Neue Klasse platform, with a streamlined design language that may be seen in the i3 saloon in three years’ time.
The Dee sedan has a modern and futuristic interpretation of classic design elements such as the kidney grille, dual headlights, and Hofmeister kink. The front-end styling is similar to the i Vision Circular, a concept car that was revealed in September 2021 and was depicted alongside the Dee in press images. The Dee’s short overhangs highlight the advantages of a dedicated electric car platform in terms of packaging, maximizing the wheelbase for a roomier interior.
The Dee concept electric vehicle (EV) has a sleek side profile with no door handles or mirror caps, as well as minimalist wheels painted yellow to match the body accents. The back of the Dee is unusual, as the basic taillights are mounted high and the bumper occupies a significant portion of the rear. The BMW roundels have also been simplified and are merely white stickers.
BMW states that the headlights and grille merge to create a "phygital icon" by combining physical and digital elements on a uniform surface that can alter its appearance using E Ink technology. The Dee can also demonstrate moods and facial expressions and communicate with people, showcasing its human-like qualities. As part of the welcome process, an image of the driver’s avatar can be projected onto the side windows.
Upon entering the car, traditional buttons and switches have been removed and there is no iDrive controller in sight. Instead, there is a BMW Mixed Reality Slider with touch-sensitive sensors on the instrument panel. These control the large head-up display that extends across the entire windshield. The driver can choose from five selectable modes to determine the amount of content they want on the HUD.
The steering wheel is as unconventional as the rest of the car, featuring a vertical spoke and touchpoints (which BMW refers to as "phygital") to control the content projected onto the windshield by the extensive HUD. The previously mentioned windows are adjustable to "gradually fade out reality" and enhance the immersive feel of the concept car’s interior.
BMW has announced that the advanced head-up display will be incorporated into a production model in 2025, along with the first EV based on the Neue Klasse platform. As a reminder, BMW will launch the Neue Klasse platform with two models in the midsize segment: a 3 Series Sedan and an iX3. These models will feature newly developed round battery cells with 20% higher energy density, 30% increased range, and 30% faster charging. Further details about the i Vision Dee will be announced later this year, including technical specifications. It is already known that the M division is working on a high-performance EV with quad motors, and the Neue Klasse platform is being designed to eventually accommodate solid-state batteries.
The first vehicles based on the Neue Klasse platform will be built at the new Debrecent plant in Hungary starting in 2025, with production at the Munich plant beginning a year later. By the end of the decade, the factory in Spartanburg, South Carolina will produce at least six electric SUVs on the new platform. BMW’s Head of Efficient Dynamics, Thomas Albrecht, stated last year that EVs will not have a range of more than 1,000 kilometers (621 miles) as it would be excessive. Chief Technology Officer Frank Weber has promised that owners will gain 30 miles (48 kilometers) of range for every minute spent recharging the battery pack, which will be around 20% lighter than current prismatic cells. BMW aims to reduce battery-related production costs by half and cut CO2 emissions by 60% during the manufacturing process.
