The long-awaited next-generation Toyota Prado is finally getting a spin-off from Lexus, set to be released soon. The luxury brand is returning to the seven-seater SUV segment with a new model, the GX, after abandoning the previous-gen RX L.

The GX is expected to hit the market globally in 2024, with its launch date estimated to be sometime after or during the same year. This new model will likely be badge with a name typically reserved for lower-end Toyota SUVs.

As part of three all-new models planned for Australia over the next year and a half, as recently announced by the company, the GX is highly anticipated. However, Lexus has yet to confirm what these vehicles will be.

Although Lexus remains tight-lipped about the details of the new GX, it is believed that the vehicle will be a top-notch 4x4 that will rival the likes of the Land Rover Defender. The GX will be made in Japan and is expected to incorporate advanced technologies from models built on the Toyota New Global Architecture – Frame (TNGA-F) platform.

This likely means that the GX will feature a similar powertrain to the 300 Series LandCruiser, such as the 3.3-liter V6 twin turbo diesel engine with 227 kW of power and 700 Nm of torque, along with a 10-speed torque-converter automatic transmission and advanced 4x4 systems.

It is important to note that the GX will not be the TX three-row SUV based on the Toyota Grand Kluger/Grand Highlander, as it has been confirmed that the latter will only be available in left-hand drive for the North American market.

In addition to the aforementioned features, there are also rumors that the GX might feature a 3.5-liter V6 turbo petrol engine with 305 kW of power and 650 Nm of torque. This engine is also said to be making its way into the next-generation Prado.

Another exciting possibility is the inclusion of the Hybrid Max powertrain, which was first seen in the Crown in Japan. This powertrain consists of a 2.4-liter four-cylinder turbo petrol engine and an electric motor on each axle, resulting in combined outputs of over 250 kW and 540 Nm. This same powertrain is already being used in the Lexus RX500h, and is expected to be seen in a variety of upcoming models.

The TNGA components’ switchable plug-and-play versatility has allowed for a broad range of tech-sharing among Toyota and Lexus models based on different architectures, including cars and trucks. As a result, the Hybrid Max powertrain is expected to be included in models such as the LandCruiser 300, Tundra full-sized pickup truck, and the next-generation HiLux, among others.
