The Audi Avus Quattro, a remarkable concept car sporting the iconic Four Rings, has made a rare appearance on video. Originally introduced at the Tokyo Motor Show in 1991, this low-riding supercar is featured in a detailed walkaround showcasing its sleek aluminum bodywork, which was crafted by hand without any paint. Remarkably, this vehicle came before the Audi Space Frame, a concept unveiled in 1993 that previewed the original A8, which debuted a year later.

Named after a race track near Berlin, the Avus Quattro shares its moniker with the Auto Union Type C from the 1930s. The body panels were incredibly thin, enabling Audi engineers to keep the vehicle’s weight impressively low at 1,250 kilograms (2,755 pounds). The 20-inch wheels, along with the tires, made up around half of the car’s height, and a NACA-style duct was mounted on the roof.

The video of the Avus Quattro reveals that despite its three differentials, triple exhaust tips, and rear-wheel steering, the supercar cannot be driven under its own power. The concept car was designed with a massive W12 engine producing just over 500 horsepower, but the engine was merely a wooden and plastic mockup. Audi projected that the car could go from 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) in three seconds, with a top speed of 210 mph (334 km/h).

Audi never intended to manufacture the Avus Quattro, with its distinctive top-mounted side mirrors. Nevertheless, rumors suggest that a few wealthy individuals tried to persuade the Ingolstadt-based automaker to build the car for as much as $12 million per unit. Ultimately, the car never went into production.

Just imagine driving a W12-powered vehicle with a gated six-speed manual gearbox. The Avus Quattro concept was equipped with Quattro all-wheel drive and weighed as much as today’s Volkswagen Golf. Interestingly, the compact hatchback was also the basis for the wild 650-horsepower GTI concept from 2007, which was fitted with a W12 engine.
