In celebration of the 150th anniversary of the Audi site in Neckarsulm, a group of twelve talented apprentices embarked on a remarkable endeavor, electrifying a beloved classic car. The fruit of their labor, proudly unveiled on July 8, 2023, was none other than the "EP4." This extraordinary vehicle represented a fusion of tradition and innovation, with the "E" symbolizing its electric drive and the "P4" paying homage to the NSU Prinz 4, a revered model manufactured in Neckarsulm from 1961 to 1973.
Dean Scheuffler, an apprentice automotive mechanic at Audi in Neckarsulm, expressed their aspirations for the project, stating, "We aimed to construct a car that not only possessed incredible speed and a captivating appearance but also paid tribute to the site’s momentous 150th anniversary." Their starting point was a 1971 NSU Prinz 4, which had languished dormant for decades until its revival in January 2023. The apprentices reawakened this slumbering "prince" and bestowed upon it a new, high-voltage heart.
However, the journey from the project’s initiation in January to its grand unveiling on Family Day was no easy feat. Countless team meetings saw trainees, trainers, and project managers collaboratively navigating the project’s progress, overcoming challenges, and determining the next steps. The initial task was to establish a solid foundation for the conversion. Apprentice bodywork and vehicle construction mechanic Mizgar Doman Hassan recalled, "Upon receiving the car, we discovered various areas of rust on its body. Addressing these spots became our primary focus."
While the budding body and paint specialists meticulously attended to the classic car’s chassis and exterior, the future automotive mechanics diligently worked on the powertrain, battery, and suspension. The EP4 bid farewell to the two-cylinder gasoline engine that once occupied its rear, making room for a powerful 240 hp (176 kW) electric motor sourced from a 2020 Audi e-tron. This motor drew its energy from a battery extracted from the plug-in hybrid Audi Q7 TFSI e quattro.
The battery found its home beneath the front hood, formerly occupied by the NSU Prinz’s fuel tank. To ensure optimal cooling, the electrified machine breathes in cooling air through a broad air intake situated at the bumper’s bottom, while heat dissipates through a sizable opening in the front hood. Additionally, the tailgate serves to enhance cooling capabilities and can be positioned partially open, granting a glimpse of the electric power plant within, reminiscent of historic racing cars based on the sporty NSU Prinz 1000. Just as rows of exposed carburetor funnels once hinted at the sporting intentions of those earlier vehicles, the EP4 now proudly showcases its electric motor.
Inside, the EP4 features a striking Signal Yellow roll cage, offering a captivating contrast. Adopting a typical racing car aesthetic, the interior retains an essence of simplicity, with all other painted surfaces rendered in black. Occupants find themselves seated in "Recaro Podium" bucket seats, designed for optimal support and comfort.
A single-board computer, accompanied by a corresponding screen, fulfills the roles of instruments, displays, speedometer, onboard computer, and diagnostic tool, all within a compact package.
The apprentices were adamant that their EP4 should proudly display its NSU Prinz heritage. Consequently, they preserved iconic elements such as the front and rear lights, while the body from the 1970s retained its characteristic shoulder and roof lines. The apprentices diligently restored the sheet metal, eliminating rust and adorning it with Audi’s signature Suzuka Grey and Brilliant Black colors. Accentuating the vehicle’s significance as a commemorative piece, the side bears the anniversary lettering "150."
The significant leap in performance necessitated extensive modifications to the chassis and bodywork. A modified floor pan sourced from an Audi A1, complete with brakes and axles, formed the solid foundation. Atop this base, the apprentices meticulously mounted the extensively modified and noticeably widened body, featuring muscular fenders that exude an unmistakable athleticism. Collaborating with Audi Design and utilizing 3D printing, the apprentices transformed their design into reality. Wide wheels elegantly nestle beneath the fenders, equipped with modern performance tires to ensure optimal grip during exhilarating acceleration and spirited cornering.
Cynthia Huster, an apprentice automotive painter, explained their approach, stating, "We wanted the EP4’s performance to be evident from every angle. The viewer’s gaze should effortlessly follow the car!" To achieve this, the EP4 proudly sports a Signal Yellow rear wing, imbuing it with an exceptionally sporty appearance. However, the twist lies in the unconventional attachment of the wing to the roll cage. Its supports gracefully traverse through the rear window, defying convention and further accentuating the EP4’s unique charm.
